Story By: JUSTIN SNYDER / PORT ROYAL SPEEDWAY – PORT ROYAL, PA – Anthony Macri backed up his 2022 sweep of the event with a dominant performance during night one of the 2023 All Star Circuit of Champions Bob Weikert Memorial.
Macri bested Mike Wagner, Brent Marks, Lance Dewease and Logan Wagner to score the $10,000 triumph. The victory was Macri’s 22nd of his career at the Juniata County oval.
“This thing was a pleasure to drive for sure,” said Macri. “I’m honestly kind of speechless.”
Mike Wagner and Justin Whittall lined up on the front row for the 30-lasp event and it was the veteran Wagner grabbing the early lead on lap one. Whittall, Macri, Tyler Courtney and Zeb Wise filled out the rest of the top five.
Macri, who started fourth, moved into the runner-up position on lap five. Logan Wagner was an early mover from his 10th starting position and three laps later the defending five-time track champion cracked the top five.
One lap later Mike Wagner was nose deep in lapped traffic and Macri and Whittall were in hot pursuit. It only took too more circuits, but Macri capitalized on Wagner’s struggles with the lappers to cruise round the top side of turns one and two to take the lead down the backstretch.
One lap later the younger Wagner continued his march forward as he moved into fourth, however Macri was cruising out front of the field with ease. By lap 18 Macri had stretched the distance between him and Mike Wagner to close to four seconds.
Four laps later Logan Wagner cracked the podium for the first time and another four laps later Dewease, who started 16th on the grid, moved into fifth.
Marks got by Logan Wagner for the final podium position one lap later and Dewease followed suit into fourth. However, Macri was not to be denied as without a caution, he cruised home to a 9.7 second advantage to capture night one of the event.
“We got into second and Wagner was setting a pretty good pace and I decided I was going to wait for lapped traffic,” said Macri. “I kind of manned up and got up top and started running like I normally do. I knew I had to get up top and make as much speed as I could, and we got it done.”
Dewease earned $1000 as the night’s hard charger courtesy of Valley Supply and Loan Dakota Acres, while 16th place finisher Dylan Cisney scored $1000 courtesy of J&S Classics as the events Warrior Award winner via random draw.
Wise, Jeff Halligan, Whittall, Courtney and Blane Heimbach rounded out the top ten.
