Story By: PJ PETERSON / JOEL MYERS JR. RACING – NEW ZEALAND – Saturday night at Western Springs Speedway, Joel Myers Jr made history as he won the final race contested at the historic track with the future of the facility looking extremely bleak.
“It’s sad that a place like Western Springs Speedway is going away, but its also really cool to win the final race contested at such a staple in NZ Motorsports,” Joel Myers Jr said. “We had a great car all night long, and to click off another win as our season comes to a close is awesome.”
Lining up on the front row of his heat race, Joel Myers Jr continued his dominance of the NZ competition as he raced to the win before lining up in the seventh starting position in his second heat race.
Finishing fifth in the second round of heats, the Sebastopol, CA driver gridded the field from the second row for the final feature event that would be run at Western Springs Speedway.
When the race came to life, Myers Jr settled into third as he chased after the lead duo. Biding his time in third, Myers Jr took advantage of the runner up getting into the wall late in the race as he moved into second and looked to create some late race fireworks.
As the laps clicked off and time ran out, Myers Jr got his elbows up and powered his way into the race lead with just two laps left in the feature event. Leading the final two laps, Myers Jr took the checkered flag and went down in history as the final feature event winner at the storied facility.
“We ran third much of the race, and then when we got into second late I thought we had something for the leader,” Myers Jr added. “To win the final race at the Springs with a late race move like that is something that I’ll always remember.”
