Story By: RYAN DELPH / RED CLAY 602 LATE MODEL SERIES – LAVONIA, GA – Jay Coen, of Dacula, Georgia, captured the victory last Saturday night, March 22 at Lavonia Speedway in round two of the Schaeffer’s Oil by Mike Bruner Red Clay 602 Late Model Series.
Jay earned the pole position for the thirty lap feature by virtue of laying down the quickest time overall during Knowles Race Parts and Bodies qualifying. He then led each and every circuit during the headliner to claim the $2,000 first place prize money.
Finishing eight-tenths of a second behind at the checkers was runner-up Billy Rushton, who started in the second position. Chris Woods rounded out the podium in third with Frankie Beard bringing home a fourth place finish. David Smith, who topped the speed charts in hot laps at the storied Lavonia, Georgia oval, grabbed the final spot inside of the top five.
In addition to the $2,000 victory, Jay Coen also earned $200 for the pole award courtesy of both Knowles Race Parts and Bodies and Billings Brothers Autism Awareness. The random draw winner for an extra $100 – courtesy of Billings Brothers Autism Awareness – was awarded to Frankie Beard. Chase Watkins, who advanced four spots during the 30-lapper, picked up an extra $125 for the hard charger award from Vance Tire & Automotive. Doug Penny, from Aynor, South Carolina, claimed the long haul award courtesy of Smith Motors. The $100 hard luck award from Justin’s Horseshoe Art went to Kevin Fisher.
A total of nineteen competitors entered the Schaeffer’s Oil by Mike Bruner Red Clay 602 Late Model Series special last Saturday at Lavonia Speedway and sixteen drivers started the main event. The starting grid was set entirely from Knowles Race Parts and Bodies qualifying and Jay Coen earned Fast Time honors with his quick lap of 17.043 seconds. Only nine drivers completed all thirty circuits in the headliner.
Next up for the cars and stars racing with the Schaeffer’s Oil by Mike Bruner Red Clay 602 Late Model Series will be a visit to Buckshot Speedway in Clanton, Alabama this Friday night, March 28. A $2,000 payday will be up for grabs for the 602 Late Models and the total feature purse is $8,340. The Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals Series will headline the program on Friday at Buckshot Speedway, as a $7,553 top prize will be on the line for the Super Late Models.
