Story By: KURT BETTLER / USAC EAST COAST SPRINT CARS – YORK HAVEN, PA – In the last 72 hours, more than 2 inches of rain fell onto the York Haven oval. However, Kolten Gouse and his staff were prepared for the challenge.
The old saying ruts and guts came to fruition as the BAPS Motor Speedway had a great character for the wingless warriors!
The thrilling heat races were won by Miller, Bruno, and Mark Smith.
23 cars were signed in for competition; however, after a few mishaps, a few were found vacant, and no consolation race was needed.
The redraw put the 23m on the pole.
The Innovative Machine and Technology 25-lap feature was set with a full field aboard.
When the green flag flew, it was Miller jumping into the lead, but Bruno ripped the bottom, making a challenge.
Back in the pack, it was Mark Smith making quick work of a few cars, charging his way to the top 5.
With 3 laps in, there were a few slow periods. Billy Ney lost an engine on a restart, Chilmonik disposed of a rear-end gear, and Steve Wilbur had a suspension issue, slowing the race down.
When the race roared back on, the competition heated up. The cars used all of the speedway’s surface, high and low!
The red light came on at lap 3 for a tangle coming to lap 4. That tangle had Helmick, Emery, and a flipping Jason Cherry across the start-finish. All drivers were okay!
Lap 4 restart, and the race went on. Miller checked out after a few short sliders from Bruno. But the reigning champion, Drevicki, started to creep his way into the hunt! Drevicki had wrangled his way past Mark Smith, Ed Aikin, and Bobby Butler!
Upfront, Miller had caught a hornet’s nest of lap traffic. Bruno and Drevicki were chomping at the bit to get to the rear bumper of the Weikel Racewear 23m. Miller was masterful in traffic.
Drevicki shot into the 2nd spot and marched to the rear bumper of the 23m with 4 to go. The duo switched lines and met traffic with 3 to go.
The race was on. Drevicki pulled up to the 23m a handful of times, but Morgantown, PA’s Miller was not to be denied. He scored his first USAC East Coast win of the season presented by Baer Den Farm.
Precision Lathing was a proud sponsor for the evening, and their entry of Bobby Butler from Phillipsburg, NJ, scored a hard-charging 5th from his 7th starting spot.
