Jake Dgien Wins In Dramatic Fashion Saturday Night At Woodhull Raceway

Story By: KENNY SHUPP / WOODHULL RACEWAY – WOODHULL, NY – Under perfect spring weather conditions the Woodhull Raceway was able to get their fifth consecutive show of 2023 into the record books on Welsh Well Drilling and Kuhn Ventures Night at the speedway. The near perfect track conditions produced five new winners for the season.

Brett Marlatt and Steve LeBarron would lead the fourteen car Doug Gross Construction RUSH Crate Late Model Division to the green for their twenty-lap feature. Yellow fever was the name of the game as a pair of yellow flags would fly before the first lap could be completed. In all, eight-caution flag slowdowns would keep the field bunched as Steve LeBarron would lead from the completion of lap one. After withstanding a barrage of yellow flags from lap one till sixteen, LeBarron was able to open a sizable lead on every restart as Marlatt and Brian Knowles would keep him within the cross hairs. The final yellow would fly on lap sixteen as a pair of lap machines would tangle with LeBarron ending his hopes for a second feature event win in 2023.

With that Brett Marlatt would inherit the lead and he would have to withstand pressure from last year’s Track Champion, Brian Knowles over the closing laps to pick up his first feature win of the season with Knowles having to settle for second place. Austin Allen would begin the event inside row four and work his way into the third and final podium finishing spot. Last week’s runner-up, Aaron Miller once again put on a strong run to claim fourth with Bryce Davis rounding the top five.

In the twenty-five-lap feature for the Insinger Performance Modifieds second generation pilot, Brian Doolittle along with Bob Silvernail would lead the sixteen- car field to the opening green. However, before the field would exit turn two on the opening lap a major traffic jam developed in turns one and two involving numerous machines.

On the re-start, Doolittle would lead the opening pair of circuits before being overhauled by Russ Morseman who would lead lap three till the cross flags were being displayed on lap twelve. May 13 Modified feature winner, Ajay Potrzebowski would get around Morseman and assume control until lap twenty-one when a determined Jake Dgien would make the winning pass on the outside coming down the front straight away. From there Dgien, even with a bent right front axle from climbing the concrete wall would stretch the advantage to a little over a second as the lead duo would cross under the double checkered flags.

May 20 winner and 2022 Track Champion, Joe Dgien would fight his way back through the field after pitting early to claim third at the finish as he was followed across the line by Russ Morseman.

Brian Doolittle would race within the lead group the entire distance in completing the top five finishers.

A solid field of seventeen machines would take the opening green in the KMD Excavating Hobby Stock Division. Glen VanCise and Brian Autin would lead the field to green, however it did not take Jeredd Dennis long to find his way to the point. Dennis was well on his way to win number four while maintaining a sizable advantage, however on a lap eleven caution Dennis abruptly went pit side handing the lead to Tracy Dunn who had worked towards the front from his outside row three starting position. From there Dunn had to withstand relentless pressure from opening night winner, Brandon Conklin in picking up his first of the season. Conklin would ride home for second after beginning the event in fifth as he was chased across the line by Mike Spencer who drove to third after beginning the twenty-lap grind in eleventh. Kaiden Dgien advanced six positions to claim fourth while Brian Austin would complete the top five.

2022 Southern Tier Customs Track Champion, Brett Crawford has found the going a bit tough this season, however he took full advantage of his outside pole position starting spot to go on and lead all twenty laps in claiming feature win number one on the season.

However, Crawfords trip to the Pepsi Victory Lane was no walk in the park as Travis Webster kept up the pressure the entire distance. Several caution flags would slow the pace and keep the field bunched, but Crawford was always quick to respond on every restart. With just a handful of laps remaining Webster would give way to a hard charging Glenn Whritenour who was now up to second and on the rear trunk lid of Crawford. For the remaining five circuits the crowd would be on their feet as GW was trying every trick in the book to pass Crawford, but with the checkers in the air it was Brett Crawford crossing the line by a single car length over Whritenour with Branden Morseman in third. Fourth went to Teddy Morseman with Rookie of the Year contender, Willy Easling rounding the top five.

Blake Lawson and Stacy Jackson would bring the fifteen car NAPA Crate Sportsman field to green for their twenty-five- lap feature with Jackson taking immediate control. A quick caution on lap two would slow the pace for the disabled machine of Quintin Buchanan and on the restart, Jackson would once again show his muscle in taking the top spot, however by lap seven two time “23” winner, Kenny Peoples Jr. had cleared Jackson and was now setting the pace. By lap fifteen, Peoples had opened an insurmountable lead as all eyes were on a spirited battle for second between Stacy Jackson and Blake Lawson. As the two ran side by side, Isabel Barron and David Mayo joined the mix making it a four-car battle for second, but with no remaining caution flags to tighten the field, Peoples ran away and hid for win three on the campaign as Jackson would hold off Blake Lawson for second. Isabel Barron continued with her very consistent season by claiming fourth with Josh Nobriga taking fifth in his first outing of the season.

In the combined Wicked Tee’s Mini Stock and FWD twenty lap feature it was Bradly Morseman backing up his Ted Morseman Sr. Mini Stock Dash for Cash win that was run earlier in the evening as he cruised to his first trip to Pepsi Victory Lane in 2023. He was followed across the line by Chris Woodard as Danielle Thomas continues her impressive season in finishing a solid third. John hand Jr. and Craig DeCamp would go on to complete the top five.

2022 FWD Track Champion, Wesley Houghtaling continues his dominance in the Wicked Tee’s FWD Division as he picked up his fourth straight win in five outings. Opening night winner, Nate Freeland was second followed by Andrew Thomas.

In the Wicked Tee’s Youth Warrior Division, Russ Morseman IV made short work of the eight- car field in route to his third trip to Pepsi Victory Lane in 2023. His stout 444 machine was too much for the competition to manage as he led all ten laps as he cruised to the win. Opening night winner, Kayleigh Morseman came across the line for second as she was chased by Izzabella Morseman in third with Jayden Stone and Brayden Feenaughty completing the top five. Rounding the field was Courtney Thomas, Alivia Sullivan and Des-A-Rae Miles.

Congratulations to all competitors.
