Scott Dellinger Claims Firecracker 40 Victory At BAPS Motor Speedway

Story By: KALI LANDIS / BAPS MOTOR SPEEDWAY – YORK HAVEN, PA – Scott Dellinger is aware of the weather, moisture in the air, and when the racetrack is going to be a little heavier than normal.

It doesn’t affect Dellinger’s focus or drive behind the wheel. Still, it seems like the car and setup is better, and the Lewisberry, Pa., driver is usually near the front battling for wins.

That was the case Saturday night at BAPS Motor Speedway. Dellinger chased down Russ Mitten just past the halfway point and captured the Meyer’s RV Super Sportsman Firecracker 40, which was his second win of the season at the York Haven, Pa., facility.

“The racetrack has been good both times we won,” Dellinger said. “They had some grip left in it, so it wasn’t really hard and slick, but then of course, everyone is fast, too. I usually strive when there is a little more grip in the track.

“We struggle a little bit on the dry-slick not having our program where it should be. We have a little bit of a disadvantage, because you get more dry-slick than you do nice tracks like that. But hey, everybody gets to run on the same surface.”

Russ Mitten started third on the grid and rocketed out front on the opening lap, blowing by Tyler Wolford. Dellinger, who started fourth, took his time getting into contention, dropping to sixth at one point.

Dellinger got hooked up and was up to second by Lap 7. He closed on Mitten in traffic and caught a caution on Lap 21, when Rohan Beasley stopped in the fourth corner.

Mitten was out front on the restart, but he got a little crossed up on the bottom of Lap 22. It allowed Dellinger to get the run he needed to get blast around the outside and win a drag race down the frontstretch.

“Russ was setting a pretty good pace,” Dellinger said. “I thought I had a little left in the tank when I got to him in lapped traffic, and he had a little bobble and let me close the gap pretty quick.

“He was running well, too. I just think we were a touch better. I don’t know how it would’ve played out if he didn’t get caught up, so it might have been a little more interesting for the fans.”

When Dellinger got by, Mitten was left to fend off Troy Rhome. The two made contact, and a four-car incident ensued. Mitten, Luke Deatrick, Jamie Rickert, and Shane McConnell were involved.

The rest of the event went non-stop. Dellinger was the class of the field and stretched his winning margin to 2.849 seconds over Rhome. Jay Fannasy, Kenny Edkin, and Wolford completed the top five.

Tony Jackson set quick time for the 25-car field with a lap of 16.581. Deatrick, Dellinger, and Daniel John were heat winners.

In the Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model main event, Tyson Mowery earned his first win of the season in the 20-Lap affair.

Matt Murphy started on the outside pole and beat Travis Mease to the stripe to lead Lap 1. Mowery, who started fifth, was fourth on the sixth circuit and was up to the runner-up spot by the completion of Lap 10.

A caution on Lap 14 tightened up the field. Mowery slipped past Murphy for the top spot two laps later and led the final three circuits to claim the victory.

Murphy settled for second, with Mease completing the podium. DJ Mease and Devin Frey rounded out the top five.

Sam Rial capped the night with a win in the Superior Homes Extreme Stock feature. The event was called after Lap 13 when rain hit the speedway.

Bob Scott Jr. started on the outside pole and led at the outset before Rial, who started fourth, shot into the lead on the second circuit. Hunter Fulton finished second, with Scott, Jason Townsend, and Patrick McClane completing the top five.
