Story By: TYLER ALTMEYER / CJB MOTORSPORTS – CARLISLE, PA – An event that every open wheel competitor wants to win, Silver Dollar Speedway’s annual Gold Cup Race of Champions is a crown jewel in the Golden State, and Lebanon, Indiana’s Spencer Bayston was right near the top, capping his three-day campaign with a top-ten score in Saturday’s $25,000-to-win finale.
Bayston, ace of the CJB Motorsports, TrueTimber Camo, Rothco, JRC Transportation, Nyce Crete and Landis, Ecynbro Trucking, C&S Lawn and Landscape, Kistler Engines, No. 5 sprint car, finished eighth in his top-ten appearance, actually starting his quest in the exact same position. Unfortunately, Bayston was forced to start eighth after a dash collision with the outside fence.
Adding an extra kick to his weekend stat card, the former World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year opened his Gold Cup weekend with a top-five during preliminary competition on Friday, September 8, starting fourth before once again finishing exactly where he started.
In all, a proud and consistent effort by Bayston and his Carlisle, Pennsylvania-based World of Outlaws program, as they were just one of three full-time Outlaw teams to find a Gold Cup top ten.
“It was really good to have a consistent weekend. I’ve always enjoyed the Gold Cup and we’ve backed that up with some great runs. The California teams did a great job representing their home turf, but I felt we were right there,” Bayston explained. “We’re excited to continue our West Coast Swing this weekend before heading back home to Pennsylvania. It’s going to be an exciting next few weekends.”
Spencer Bayston and CJB Motorsports will continue their 2023 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series campaign with two more nights in California. First up is Kings Speedway in Hanford, California, for the $21,000-to-win Tom Tarlton Classic on Friday, September 15. The next night takes the tour to Placerville Speedway in Placerville, California, for the 49er Gold Rush Classic.
