Story By: ASHLEY MCCUBBIN / OUTLAW MIDGET RACING CLUB – INNISFIL, ONT – Continuing to build off the speed he showed last year, Nick Spiez picked up the victory in the Outlaw Migets presented by Canadian Tire Innisfil season opener at Sunset Speedway on Sunday.
After winning his second qualifying heat, Spiez got to start up front for the feature, and took advantage of the track position. He battled back and forth with Mikey Homewood, each of them leading laps throughout the 25-lap affair as they tried to get the better of each other. Spiez took the top spot for the final time on Lap 17, pacing the final eight laps en route to the checkered flag.
It ultimatley turned into a father-son one-two finish as his father Kevin Spiez made the move on Homewood in the final laps to secure the runner-up spot. Homewood held on for third ahead of Russ Couture and Adam Tyo.
Derek Millman put together a solid outing en route to sixth in front of Fred Homewood. Rookie Kurt Lawton was the first time to surrender to mechanical gremlins and fail to finish in eighth ahead of Brett Dorion and Glenn Raymond. Raymond was part of the conversation for a podium finish until his issues.
Jason Metcalfe and Mark Grant rounded out the field.
Heat wins went to Kevin Spiez, Metcalfe, Nick Spiez, and Mikey Homewood. The full results from those is available on the series website.
