Russ Morseman Claims George Williams Memorial Modified Feature At Woodhull Raceway

Story By: KENNY SHUPP / WOODHULL RACEWAY – WOODHULL, NY – It was DeJa’Vu all over again at the Woodhull Raceway as for the second consecutive week a late afternoon shower caused a two plus hour delay in the start of the Annual George Williams Memorial which was presented by The Elkland Moose, Ken’s Collision and Hubertus Service.

After a Yeomans effort to get the High Banked One-Third of a Mile Oval into race shape, racing got underway with some old and fresh faces finding victory lane.

In the Insinger Performance Modified feature seventeen cars took the opening green flag and on a super heavy race track it required plenty of horsepower and that is exactly is what Russ Morseman has, running a Big Block Power Plant against a field dominated by the more popular Small Block Engines.

The second- generation pilot from Rathbone, NY got to the front quickly from his eighth starting position and was able to cruise to his first win of the season as he was able to hold off last weeks feature winner, Stacy Jackson who had to settle for second.

Donnie Lawson, who along with Jackson led the field to the opening green but neither had anything for the high- flying Morseman as Lawson would hold on to complete the top three podium finishers.

Dayton Brewer and Brian Doolittle would go on to complete the top five.

In Hometown Excavation Crate Sportsman feature action, brothers Cayden and Blake Lawson would bring the field to the opening green flag.

2023 Track Champion Kenny Peoples Jr. has had some particularly good runs thus far in “24” but has been shut out of victory lane. However, on this night the Addison NY native was not to be denied as he moved from his fourth starting spot into the lead and would never look back taking his first win of the campaign.

Chasing Peoples across the line was Cayden Lawson who ran within the lead pack the entire distance with Tim Guild in tow.

Like his brother, Blake Lawson took full advantage of his upfront starting position to claim fourth at the finish as he was chased across the line by Dale Welty who advanced two positions to round the top five.

John Waters has had a brilliant career in the Crate Late Model Division. A former track champion and RUSH SERIES Crate Late Model Champ, Waters has opted to keep things close to home this season and leave the travel to someone else.

Brian Knowles and Joe Layfield would lead the charge of the Empire Crushing LLC RUSH CLM to green, but it was Waters who exerted himself from third to the lead early on and from there cruised to his second consecutive win of the season at Woodhull and like last week he did it in convincing style.

Former Woodhull Track Champion, Brian Knowles of Painted Post would put in another significant effort but came up shy in claiming the runner-up spot at the completion of the twenty-lap affair.

Canisteo Connection card carrying member, Brett Marlatt would advance one position from fourth to third in rounding the podium.

Veteran competitor, Joe Layfield had one of his better efforts as he was able to hold off a young gun and local Addison High School Student, Marshall O’Brian as the pair would complete the top five.

Mike Spencer made the move from the Hobby Stock Division into the Street Stocks in 2023. Purchasing a proven mount from perennial Street Stock Champion, Glen Whritenour, Spencer has made great strides thus far in 2024 and on this night, he was able to put it all together in claiming his first feature win of the season in the Southern Tier Customs sponsored division.

Third generation pilot, Bradly Morseman and Spencer would lead the field to the opening green with Spencer getting the jump early on and never looking back.

In the caution free twenty lap event, 2023 Track Champion, Teddy Morseman Jr. was able to keep Spencer within the cross hairs, but to no avail as he would have to settle for second.

Last week’s feature winner, Clayton McClean was again right in the thick of things keeping the lead duo in sight as he claimed third at the finish chased across the line by Bradly Morseman and Brian Butler of Hornell who completed the top five.

The Sawyer’s Camper and RV Service and Repair Hobby Stocks saw a solid field of fourteen machines take the opening green flag for their twenty lap A Main.

In an incredible drive, Dale Houghtaling would advance from thirteenth on the opening grid to take his first ever feature at Woodhull.

For Houghtaling it was no easy task as he had to contend with several heavy weights in the division including young lady competitor, Meadow Dgien who put on an impressive drive herself advancing from tenth to second at the finish, her best showing in recent memory.

Brian Austin has struggled mightily over the past couple seasons, but he was able to put things all together on this night to claim third after lining up outside pole for the start of the twenty-lap feature.

Veteran driver Scott Brown and relative newcomer, Tyler Deeghan would both put on steady drives to complete the top five.

It was a busy night for the Big Jim’s Wicked Tee’s Quad C Division featuring a blend of both front and rear wheel driven 4 cylinder Mini Stocks as the division had a make-up feature coupled with a regular feature plus the Annual King of the Bull Ring one on one single elimination event which was won by Wesley Houghtaling.

In the make -up feature held over from May 4, Danielle Thomas took no prisoners as she cruised to her second feature win of the season chased across the line by her boyfriend, Travis Southard who like Thomas is having a great 2024 campaign.

Ryan Stone led the charge of a trio of Stone Family members chased across the line by Jacob and Joshua Stone.

In the night cap, Wes Houghtaling backed up his King of the Bull Ring victory with his second trip to victory lane in 2024 picking up the win.

Tony Dickerson began the twenty-lap event outside row four and would come up second at the completion as he was followed to the double checkers by Travis Southard, Danielle Thomas and Richard Wagner.

The ten lap Wicked Tee’s Youth Warrior Division found three youngsters taking the green and for the second straight week, Markus Kerr was able to find his way to victory lane.

Izzabella Morseman and two-time 2024 class feature winner, Keyleigh Morseman completed the top three.

Congratulations to all competitors.

Up next at Woodhull the track will flip the calendar to June and open things up with a Regular Super 7 Show featuring all the weekly divisions.

In addition, the Ted Morseman Sr. Quad C Dash for Cash will be on the card and for the fans it is Autograph Night along with Bed Sheet Banner Night.

The program is sponsored by Welsh Well Drilling and Kuhn Ventures, both of Addison, NY.

Pit gates for the June 1 show open at 3:30 pm with main Grandstands to follow at 4:30 pm.
