Shaw Takes Second Career Milton CAT 250; Local Drivers Shine in Front of Packed Stands

Story By: WHITE MOUNTAIN MOTORSPORTS PARK – NORTH WOODSTOCK, NH – With a massive crowd on hand for the 7th annual Milton CAT Midsummer Classic 250 at White Mountain Motorsports Park, the local racers competed with plenty of pride on Saturday evening.

The highlight of the summer season at New Hampshire’s Favorite Short Track started off with the Dad’s 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Division. Twelve strong, these racers of tomorrow kicked off feature racing action with Sophia Beer and Jackson Hunt leading the action to the first yellow for a mix-up between Madison Potter and Kiptyn Aldrich.

Hunt would lead on the restart and begin to grow his lead before the field was stopped for Aldrich’s hard lick into the turn four tire barrier. Jackson Hunt would fend off Connor Stygles and Hayden Bushey to take his first career win at the line.

In between American-Canadian Tour qualifying for the Milton CAT Midsummer Classic 250, the Fisher Auto Parts Flying Tigers took the field for their 35-lap main event. Rookie Austin Sicard brought the field to green with Nate Hamblett to his outside and fellow rookies Owen Cheney and Kyle Willis in tow. Pulling double duty on Saturday, point leader Brandon Gray made the long march to the front while Sicard looked like a seasoned veteran out front, leading until lap 18. Gray would round the rookie to take over the lead and only slowed once for the division’s lone caution with two laps remaining. Gray and Groton, Vermont’s Luke Peters duked it out for the green-white-checkered finish with Gray maintaining his win streak followed by Peters and Shane Sicard on the podium.

Likewise, the Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Minis saw a rookie lead the field, this time in the hands of young Landyn O’Donnell. The North Haverhill young-gun led the pack through the halfway point while Tyler Thompson, Kyler Davis and Patrick Switser cut their way through the pack. Unfortunately for O’Donnell a lap 17 caution for a stalled Scott Senecal with a flat tire proved to be his undoing with a missed shift on the restart taking away his chance for a first-time win. The final circuits proved some of the most entertaining of the evening as the pack maintained side-by-side battles to the end. Tyler Thompson narrowly edged out Jason Goodbout, Jr. for the win with Patrick Switser taking third in a three-wide-battle against McKenna Merchant and Kyler Davis at the line!

The American-Canadian Tour brought thirty-nine teams from across New England and Quebec for the Milton CAT Midsummer Classic 250, the first of two appearances for the international tour at White Mountain this summer. Following heat races, the consolation round and the Last Chance B-Feature carved the thirty-nine entries down to twenty-nine starters in the 250-lap main event. 2006 King of the Mountain D.J. Shaw and former White Mountain ACT victor Tom Carey III brought the field to green. With Shaw leading the early circuits, White Mountain standout Bryan Wall, Jr. kept up with the defending ACT champion out front.

Hard luck struck the White Mountain weekly teams starting with Jaden Perry going in the spin cycle to bring the first yellow on lap 25 before Tanner Woodard brought out the lap 42 caution after stopping on the top of turn two. After running strong in the opening half, nine-time track champion Quinny Welch lost all electrical power and shut down, ending his run early. Going against the grain, Wall’s Ford Platinum Series point leader Gabe Brown kept pace with Shaw at the head of the field for the majority of the 250-lap spectacular before everything went south as a piece of metal lodged in his right front tire, sending him out of a strong second-place run.

In the final circuits, 2023 White Mountain track champion Kasey Beattie, now leading the ACT Rookie of the Year battle, battled hard with D.J. Shaw for the win. Again and again, Beattie drew alongside Shaw on both the high side and down low, unable to get just the right momentum to make his #45NH stick. Beattie gave one final charge at Shaw on the final lap but it was not enough. D.J. Shaw became the first two-time Milton CAT Midsummer Classic 250 champion under the twin checkered flags with Tom Carey III sneaking around Beattie to take second.

White Mountain Motorsports Park returns on Saturday, August 10 for the rain-postponed Round #2 of the Central Asphalt Paving Triple Crown Series for the Fisher Auto Parts Flying Tigers! The Foley Oil & Propane Late Models, Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Minis, Ammonoosuc Asphalt Mini Late Models, Wayne’s Market Dwarf Cars and Dads 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Division are all back in action with a 6:00pm Post Time!
