Story By: RYAN DELPH / SOUTHERN NATIONALS SERIES – TAZEWELL, TN – With strong storms and damaging wind barrelling towards the Tazewell, Tennessee area, tonight’s $10,053 to win ‘Ray Varner Ford 53’ at the bad-fast Tazewell Speedway has been postponed until Sunday, July 30.
The final points race of the 2023 Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series presented by Coltman Farms Racing and fueled by Sunoco season will start earlier tomorrow with hopes of the full racing program being completed by 10:00pm.
Pit gates will swing open at 2:00pm on Sunday with the grandstands opening at 5:00pm. The Drivers Meeting will get underway at 6:00pm with hot laps beginning promptly at 6:30pm. General admission will be $25.00 for adults, while kids ages nine and under are admitted for FREE. Pit admission will be $40.00 for adults and $30.00 for kids ages twelve and under.
Along with the ground-pounding Super Late Models, the Sportsman ($1,000 to win), Classic Car ($600 to win), and Street Stock ($600 to win) divisions will also be on the racing card tomorrow evening. Billy Ogle, Jr. (’05), Jimmy Owens (’06), Chris Madden (’07 & ’08), Jimmy Owens (’09), Jonathan Davenport (’10), Vic Hill (’11), Chris Madden (’12), Jonathan Davenport (’13), Eric Jacobsen (’14), Vic Hill (’15), Scott Bloomquist (’16), Brandon Overton (’17 & ’18), Dale McDowell (’19), David Payne (’20), Dakotah Knuckles (’20), Michael Chilton (’21), and Dale McDowell (’22) have won Southern Nationals Series events previously at “The Taz.”
Local favorite Jimmy Owens will bring the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series point lead into Tazewell on Sunday, but finds himself only six markers ahead of Carson Ferguson in the latest standings. With each driver able to drop his worst finish of the tour after the ‘Ray Varner Ford 53,’ five drivers technically have a chance at the Championship including Owens, Ferguson, Donald McIntosh, Ricky Weiss, and Kenny Collins. Body rules and the Droop Rule will be the same as those agreed on by both the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series – among others. The entry fee will be $100.00 and transponders will be available to rent. Any driver not advancing into the feature field will receive $75.00 in tow money.
