Story By: MARTIN BELANGER / CORNWALL MOTOR SPEEDWAY – CORNWALL, ONT – We wrap the 55th season preview with our headline division, our JLB Heating and Cooling 358-Modifieds, what a summer ahead with the most lucrative regular season in terms of purses being offered to the drivers. Big names and talented field of cars are expected during the season.
Fans that attended Cornwall Motor Speedway over the year were able to witness some of the greatest names in the Modifieds, if we look at the last decade, we have seen 3 names sharing the championship title with Corey Wheeler, Carey Terrance and Chris Raabe being crowned champions. Last season, Wheeler and Terrance went into a heated battle until the last event before seeing Wheeler getting a 3rd track title with a 12-point edge over Terrance. Expectations will be the same for both drivers as they are early favourites again along with Johnathon Ferguson, Kyle Dingwall, and Ryan Stabler. You can add newcomer Jackson Gill and returning Luke Whitteker being part of driver trying to get a top 5 positions. You can add Gage Morin, Louis Jackson, Joey Ladouceur, Brian McDonald, Gilles Godard, Lee Ladouceur, Kevin Hamel, Gavin MacFarlane, Chris Ferguson, Brianna Ladouceur and rookie contender Thomas Cook being part of the core group of competitors on every Sunday evening.
It is by far the most lucrative schedule presented at Cornwall in the last years as 8 events will pay a minimum of $4,555 to win which includes 3 races that will give $10,055 to the winner, the amount of event could reach double digits when we add the Canadian Super DIRT Weekend which should have a spectacular schedule to be announced soon! Some new events are part of the schedule as the Short Track Super Series is visiting on Wednesday, August 7 and the American Racer North Series will make a first stop on June 23. The Fat Les Chip Stand Canadian Nationals Series will bring a new look as Modifieds will need to have Sail Panels. The Canadian Big Block Series is also part of the calendar on June 30th, a total of 17 events are part of the regular schedule.
The action starts this Sunday night with the first round of the Fat Les Chip Stand Canadian Nationals as we will get a very talented field of cars for opening night with several invaders in town for the 55-lap, $5,555 to win feature race!
