Story By: KENNY SHUPP / WOODHULL RACEWAY – WOODHULL, NY – A late afternoon downpour did not deter the Woodhull Raceway from completing their program on Saturday, May 18 and although it was a two-hour late start, the entire event was put into the record books including nine features. Up until this night Woodhull had suffered through no less than two complete washouts and one shortened event all due to Mother Nature.
The Canisteo Police Club sponsored the entire program where many of the local fire, police and EMS workers were recognized for all their services to the local communities.
In the Insinger Performance Modified twenty-five lap feature, Gregg Turner and Stacy Jackson would lead the seventeen-car field to green with Jackson getting the jump and leading all laps to his first feature win of 2024.
Only two caution flags would slow the pace, and, on each restart, Jackson was up to all challengers including Dayton Brewer who began the event inside row four. Brewer would flex his muscle early on getting into the runner-up spot but that is as far as he would go in claiming the runner-up spot. Donnie Lawson would begin the quarter century grind in third and that is where he would finish in completing the top three podium positions.
Opening night winner, Josh Keesey put on a great drive coming from twelfth to fourth at the finish chased across the line by 2022 Woodhull Track Champion, Joe Dgien who like Keesey drove through the field to round the top five.
Former RUSH Series Champion, John Waters made short work of the Empire Crushing LLC, RUSH CLM twenty lap feature as he shot into the early lead from his outside front row starting position and win the green to checkered event in just a tick over six minutes.
Former class Track Champ, Brian Knowles began the feature go outside row two and got to the runner-up spot but that would be it as he was over a full straight away the winning machine of Waters.
Brett Marlatt was third at the finish with opening night winner and Water’s teammate, Steve LeBarron in fourth.
Jacob Tubbs would line-up sixth on the opening green and advance one position to complete the top five.
Rickie Loucks, Marshall O’Brian and Joe Layfield would complete the field.
Adam Taft has had some good and bad runs on the High Banks of the Woodhull Raceway over the past few years. However, on this night he and his lucky number thirteen machine would not be denied as he led all twenty-five laps in winning the Hometown Excavation Crate Sportsman feature event and for Taft it was his first ever at Woodhull.
Twenty cars rumbled to the opening green in a feature that was riddled with one yellow flag on top of another, (five total) however on each restart, Taft was able to hold off all comers in route to the triumph.
April 20 feature winner, Isabel Barron once again put on a masterful effort coming from deep in the field to claim second at the double checkered flags as she was chased across the line by many times Woodhull Raceway Crate Sportsman Track Champion, Kenny Peoples Jr. who nailed third at the finish.
Todd Titus put on a steady drive to claim fourth while Carter Crooker held off his father Greg to complete the top five.
In Southern Tier Customs twenty-lap feature action, Brian Butler and Mark Griffin could bring the eleven-car field to the opening green, but it was Clayton McClean flexing his muscle early on and taking command from his inside row two starting position. From there McClean would stretch his advantage to almost two seconds over Mike Spencer who had nothing for the high-flying McClean as he cruised to the win. Spencer would have to settle for second place at the completion of the twenty-lap feature event.
Griffin and Butler would both drift back from their front row starting spots, however they would finish third and fourth respectively with 2023 Street Stock Track Champion, Teddy Morseman Jr. rounding the top five.
Early in the program there was a make-up feature for the earlier season rainout on May 4 for the Sawyer’s Camper and RV Service and Repair Hobby Stock’s. Brian Austin and Jason Ketrow would bring the field to the opening green with Ketrow taking command early and cruising to his first feature win of the season. Brandon Conklin would begin the twenty-lap make-up inside row three and go on to finish second with Dale Houghtaling advancing four positions from seventh to round the top three podium.
Class veteran’s Glenn Vancise and Scott Brown would go on to complete the top five.
In the nightcap, Mike Carapella and Dale Houghtaling would lead he charge of sixteen Hobby Stocks to the opening green, but it was Dillon Philip who stole the show as he drove through a stacked field from his inside row starting spot to claim the victory and back up his opening night , April 20 win.
Scott Brown and Dale Houghtaling both capped off great nights as the pair would finish second and third in the twenty-lap event. Likewise, Brandon Conklin, who was runner-up in the opener would go on the finish forth in the regularly schedule feature with young lady competitor, Meadow Dgien advancing three spots from eighth to round the top five.
In Big Jim’s Wicked Tee’s Quad C twenty lap feature action, Danielle Thomas would grab the early advantage from her third starting spot and go on to victory lane. It was the first win of the campaign for last year’s class runner-up in the decisive point tally as she was chased across the line by track newcomer, Phil Burns who came from eleventh to finish second.
Aaron Robinson would advance some eleven spots to claim third at the checkered flags chased across the line by Richard Wagner and Ryan Stone who completed the top five finishers.
Attrition was the name of the game in the Quad C feature as only six of the original eighteen completed the twenty-lap feature.
Marcus Kerr was able to dethrone Kayleigh Morseman who had won the previously two staged Wicked Tee’s Warrior features.
For Kerr it was perhaps his first win ever in the Youth Division as he was followed across the line by Kayleigh Morseman, Izzabella Morseman and Kolston DeCamp.
Last but certainly not least the NY 600 Sprints made their lone appearance of the 2024 season at Woodhull and the pending inclement weather had something to do with many teams making the trip, but six drivers did make the tow and in their feature event it was Karstin Petti taking the feature win over Pete Coffey with Eric Wise completing the top three.
Jerry Gurney and Casey Williams would follow in tow.
Congratulations to all competitors.
Up next at Woodhull, it will be the Annual George Williams Memorial Event set for Saturday, May 25, 2024. In addition to a Super 7 Show the Insinger Performance Modifieds will run a special $2,500 to win feature. The night of action presented by The Elkland Moose, Ken’s Auto Collision and Hubertus Service.
