Story By: KENNY SHUPP / WOODHULL RACEWAY – WOODHULL, NY – With Southern Tier Customs of Woodhull, NY along with RLB Trucking of Jasper, NY onboard as nightly event sponsors, it was Mid-Season Double Point Night at the Woodhull Raceway with just one new face finding victory lane in the Super 7 Show.
Dundee, NY native, Brady Fultz has had more Insinger Performance Modified runner-up finishes in 2024 than Elizabeth Taylor has husbands.
Week after week he has shown plenty of speed piloting the potent Herbie Wright owned machine, but just not enough to seal the deal.
A pair of 2024 Insinger Performance Modified feature winners in Joe Dgien and Russ Morseman would bring the twenty-car field to green with Dgien leading the first two circuits before Morseman would take control on lap three.
A couple of yellow flags would slow the pace on laps seven and ten, but Morseman was able to hold off all challengers.
However, it was a lap twelve restart that would find Fultz moving past Morseman and take over the top spot and lead the remaining dozen laps in route to his first trip to victory lane of the season.
Dgien would not go away quietly as the 2022 Track Champion stayed glued to the rear bumper of the Fultz machine and when the double checkered flags waved it was Fultz just beating Dgien to the line by a margin of .174 seconds.
Donnie Lawson put on another one of his consistent performances, lining up eighth on the opening grid and moving forward to complete the top three podium finishers.
Two- time 2024 Modified feature winner, Ajay Potrzebowski Jr. came from eleventh to claim fourth while Carter Crooker, driving a second Herb Wright creation had the best run of the night advancing from eighteenth to complete the top five finishers.
In Hometown Excavation Sportsman twenty-five lap feature action, two of the heavy weights in the class (Peoples and Barron) would bring the twenty-car field to the opening green flag with Quintin Buchanan taking control of the first three laps from his outside row two starting position.
But Kenny Peoples has been on a mission over the past several weeks as he moved past Buchanan on lap four to take command and never look back.
Three caution flags would slow the pace in the early going on laps one, four and six, but from that point on it was clean and green for Peoples who had to deal with opening night winner and 2022 Track Champion, Isabel Barron.
Barron was able to keep the battle for the win interesting as she stayed with Peoples throughout, but at the end of the day it was Kenny Peoples Jr. picking up his fifth win of the season with Barron having to settle for second.
Quintin Buchanan had one of his best runs of the season finishing third as he was chased across the line by Cayden Lawson and Tim Guild who completed the top five.
Nine Empire Crushing RUSH Crate Late Models made the call for their twenty lap A Main.
2024 feature winners, Brett Marlatt and Steve LeBarron would bring the field to green with Marlatt getting the jump as he would go on to lead the entire distance.
Four yellow flags would slow the pace and keep the field bunched, but the second-generation Canisteo, NY pilot was able to keep all others at bay.
Former class Track Champion, Brian Knowles lined up outside row two and was able to dispose of LeBarron and get into second but that is as far as his charge would get as he had to settle for second with LeBarron claiming third.
Joe Layfield continues his run of consistent finishes nailing fourth with Rich McNeal taking home fifth place money.
Demetrios Drellos made the exceptionally long haul from near the Capital Region of NY pay off as he lined up last and moved forward to claim sixth at the finish in his first appearance at Woodhull.
In the Southern Tier Street Stock twenty lap feature a pair of top guns in the division, Teddy Morseman Jr. and Mick Seeley would bring the ten-car field to green with Morseman getting the jump.
However, May 18 and June 1 feature winner, Clayton Mclean would blast by both Seeley and Morseman to take the lead and from there stretch the distance as he cruised to win three on the campaign.
Mike Spencer would line up fifth on the opening grid and make some nifty moves advancing into second, but that is where his charge would end as the May 25 feature winner would have to settle for the runner-up position.
Last season’s runner-up in the decisive point tally, Mick Seeley would race within the lead pack the entire distance to round the podium.
Hornell, NY native, Brian Butler would move from eighth to fourth at the double checkered flags with third gen pilot, Bradly Morseman completing the top five.
Seventeen machines would take the opening green for the twenty lap Sawyer’s Camper and RV Service and Repair Hobby Stock feature with three caution flags slowing the pace on laps four, five and eight.
After that everyone settled down and got into the groove.
June 1 feature winner, Brandon Conklin would lead the opening four circuits before giving way to Dillon Philip as he would move into the top spot after lining up outside pole position.
From there on it was the Dillion Philip show as he would lead the remaining sixteen circuits as he cruised to his third feature win in 2024 backing up his opening night and May 18 victories.
Tioga, Pa veteran speedster, Scott Brown had his best finish of the 2024 season, and it did not come easy as he lined up ninth on the opening start, moved through a very competitive field in making it to second place, but that is where his charge would end.
After leading early, Conklin would drift to finish third at the end of the twenty-lap grind as he was chased across the line by Glenn VanCise who came from fourteenth to fourth with young lady competitor Meadow Dgien advancing from seventh to complete the top five in yet another solid run.
Wes Houghtaling has been on a tear for the past several seasons in the Big Jim’s Wicked Tee’s Quad C Division and 2024 is no exception as he would go on to win number six on the season, however his victory did not come without a spirted battle with Travis Southard who led the opening five circuits in the class which features a mixture of both front and rear wheel driven creations.
However, it was Houghtaling taking over the lead after a lap five restart and from there he would then go on to find victory lane.
May 4 and 18 class feature winner, Danielle Thomas would put on another one of her patented performances lining up eighth on the opening grid and moving into second at the completion of the twenty lap A Main.
Third place went to Jeff Lafler who maintained his position throughout from start to finish with relative newcomer, Scott Mcray crossing the line fourth.
Josh Stone would complete the top five.
Thus far in 2024, Houghtaling and Thomas have won all eight features that have been staged, Houghtaling with six and Thomas with a pair.
Prior to intermission, the six car Big Jim’s Wicked Tee’s Youth Warrior Division made their way onto the High Banked One-Third of a Mile oval for their ten-lap feature.
After winning four straight, Markus Kerr was shut out of victory lane last week, however he came roaring back this week leading the entire ten lap distance to claim win five on the season.
Courtney Thomas would go on to secure second place as she was followed across the line by Kolston Decamp in third. Cadin Thomas, Izzabella Morseman and three-time 2024 winner, Kayleigh Morseman would complete the field.
Congratulations to all competitors.
Up next at Woodhull will be the Annual Jim Williams Memorial on Saturday, June 29, 2024.
