Billings Triumphs in Thrilling Comeback to Capture 358-Modified Victory

Story By: TIM BALTZ / BROCKVILLE ONTARIO SPEEDWAY – BROCKVILLE, ONT – The Brockville Ontario Speedway grandstands were packed this past Saturday night with six classes in action. Fans also got to meet their favorite driver at intermission with a big autograph session, before drivers took to the track for some exciting racing action.

The Street Stocks always put on a great battle in their 15 lap events and on this night, it was no different. Jonathan Galipeau led early over Mike Schonauer and Tommy Lizotte. Galipeau had a great car but Lizotte was a bit quicker and took over the lead on lap 8 and looked to have the race in hand. Points leader Todd Raabe was on the charge and made it to second before a caution slowed the field on lap 13. On the final restart Lizotte, who made hard contact with the wall early in the event, jumped out front and held off repeated challenges from Raabe to score the win with Schonauer third, Nick Gauvreau and Francis Gauthier the top 5.

It was an emotional night for Matt Billings in the 30 lap DIRTCar 358 Modified feature event. Early in the race he ran in the number three spot behind Gavin Mcfarlane and Jarrett Herbison. Herbison would take the lead on lap 4 with Tristan Draper closing quickly in 2nd. The top two had a great battle going, until lap 14 when they made slight contact sending Herbison around in turns one and two. Herbison would restart at the back along with Draper, who was penalized for the contact. This left Billings in front over Mcfarlane and Kalen Draper third. Draper moved to second and chased down Billings for the lead. Both drivers put on a spirited battle for the top spot, but on lap 28 the yellow flew forcing one final restart. When the green flew Billings used his experience to keep the lead as Draper made one final attempt to get the top spot away off turn four. On this night Matt Billings would do it, scoring his first 358 Modified win since July 23rd of 2106 at Brockville. Draper crossed in second over Johnathon Ferguson, Cornwall Speedway invader Ryan Stabler and Jarrett Herbison recovered to finish fifth.

Xavier Perrin was the driver to beat in the early stages of the 25 lap DIRTCar Sportsman feature event, with Domonick Merkley and Dylan Moore there to challenge. Perrin and Merkley were the class of the field early as others were steadily making their way to the front, including Bobby Herrington, Jessica Power and Gavin Eisele. On lap 8 these drivers made up some spots as a multi-car tangle in turn two collected Michael Dillon, Dylan Moore and others. On the restart Bobby Herrington would make his bid for the lead going from third to first down the back straight away and start to run away from the field. Behind Herrington Tyler Stewart was on the charge getting by Power and Perrin to move to second but had a long way to go to catch the leader. On lap 24 the break that Stewart needed came in the form of a caution, giving everyone one last shot at the leader. On the restart Bobby Herrington nailed it perfectly as he jumped out front and never looked back, recording his 4th win of the season. Stewart finished a career best second with Gavin Eisele, Jessica Power and Kraig Handley completing the top 5.

Ryan Poole was the early pace setter at the start of the 20 lap Surprenant Truck Shop Crate Sprint car feature, with Guy Gosselin and Lee Ladouceur giving chase. The top three drivers were locked in a tight battle for the lead but on the move was Andrew Hennessy. The Picton native won at Can Am Friday night and was moving forward as he took third from Gosselin on lap 12 then got by Ladouceur a couple of laps later, as he continued his pursuit of leader Ryan Poole. On lap 17 Hennessy made the winning move, getting by Poole on the high side and checked out to score his first Brockville win and second of the weekend. Poole came across second, with Lee Ladouceur Adam Turner and Guy Gosselin competing the top 5.

Points leader Blake Smith was the driver to beat early on in the 12 lap Novice Sportsman event with Logan Brown and Nick Merkley right there to challenge. Smith was in control but Brown found a little extra through the middle portion of the race track, as he got by Smith on lap 5. Smith and Merkley had a spirited battle on this night for the runner up spot, but Logan Brown was the dominant force as he pulled away to score his second win in 4 tries at The BOS in 2024. Smith increased his point lead with a second place finish, with Merkley crossing in third, Melcolm Banks made a great recovery after an early race tangle to finish up fourth, Matt Mould claimed the fifth spot.

The 23 car field in the Mini Stock 15 lap event closed out Karra’s Burgers and Fries and Tackaberry Construction night at Brockville and Colin Chisamore was the early pace setter with Rylan Banks and Steven Boies running in the top three. Chisamore looked solid on this night, but Dakota Boal was on the move as he took the lead from Chisamore on lap 5 and appeared to have the car to beat. Hayden Brown moved forward and showed how string he was as he battle Boal for the top spot, eventually taking the lead just past halfway and appeared to be headed for victory. Points leader Matt Boal started deep in the pack and got to second on lap 13 and tried to run down the leader. At the checker flag Hayden Brown had just enough to hold off a determined Matt Boal to collect his first win of the season and first since September 2nd of 2023. Matt Boal, Dakota Boal, Colin Chisamore and Clayton Celovsky completed the top five finishers

Racing action continues at The BOS with the return of the Super DIRTCar Series on Wednesday July 24th. Tim Fuller took down the top stars on the series and the Northeast Modified Hall of Famer will be back to try a repeat performance in 2024. Bobby Herrington will try to defend his Sportsman win from last year with the Big Blocks in town. Adam Turner will be back in his Crate Late Model to try and defend home turf against the best with the Northeast Late Model Alliance Series.

Gates open at 4pm with hot laps and time trials starting at 6pm. The green flag flies with opening ceremonies and the national anthems at 7pm.
