Jake Dgien Takes First Modified Feature Win Of The Season At Woodhull Raceway

Story By: KENNY SHUPP / WOODHULL RACEWAY – WOODHULL, NY – It was a remarkably busy night at the Woodhull Raceway on Saturday, June 1, 2024, as Welsh Well Drilling and Kuhn Ventures presented the show.

Nine total features including a pair of make-ups from May 4 plus a Mini Stock Dash for Cash made up the card plus it was Bed Sheet Banner and Fan Appreciation Driver Autograph Night.

Throughout his entire career, Jake Dgien has driven a family owned Modified, but in 2024 he was afforded the opportunity to drive for Herrington Motorsports, a Woodhull, NY based team and he has made it pay off in a huge way with consistent finishes, but no wins until this night.

Dgien would line up fourth on the opening grid as young gun, Russ Morseman IV and veteran campaigner, Chris Ostrowski would bring the sixteen-car Insinger Performance Modified field to green.

Morseman, just a young teenager and in only his first season as a Modified competitor looked to be on his way to his first win leading the charge throughout the first nineteen laps, but it was a late restart that spelled his undoing as both Dgien and Brady Fultz who lined up eighth were able to work by and assume command.

From there Dgien just had to hold on as Fultz kept up the pressure for the remaining few circuits to claim his first win of the 2024 season.

Morseman IV would have to settle for third after a masterful performance with Ostrowski taking home fourth place money.

Steve Coots began the twenty-five-lap grind in tenth and moved forward to round out the top five in an event that was slowed on three occasions by caution flags.

In the Hometown Excavation Crate Sportsman twenty-five lap feature Cayden Lawson and Quintin Buchanan would bring the seventeen-car field to the opening green flag with Lawson getting the early advantage and never looking back as the Addison, NY native picked-up his first feature win of the season.

Four yellow flag slow downs would keep the field bunched up, but Lawson was up to the challenge on every re-start and in the late stages he had to hold off a hard charging Connor Brown who had moved into second after lining up eleventh on the original start.

Tim Guild would begin the A Main in fourth and advance one spot to complete the podium.

Tony Harris made a rare Woodhull Raceway appearance pay off as the veteran Campbell driver would advance from ninth to fourth chased across the line by Quintin Buchanan who raced within the lead pack the entire distance.

A pair of features in the Empire Crushing RUSH Crate Late Model Division would find a make-up from May 4 plus the regularly scheduled nightly event.

In the make-up, John Waters was able to hold off his teammate, Steve LeBarron as the veteran Whitesville driver made it three straight in RUSH CLM Woodhull Raceway action.

Try as he might, opening night winner, LeBarron had to settle for the runner-up position as the lead duo were chased across the line by 2023 Track Champion, Austin Allen who has spent most of the season traveling to RUSH Series Events across the northeast.

Brett Marlatt was able to keep second year driver, Marhsall O’Brian at bay as the two rounded out the top five finishers.

In the regularly scheduled night cap twenty lap Empire Crushing RUSH CLM feature, it appeared to a repeat of the make-up as Waters and LeBarron would bring the ten-car field to green, but Waters would become an early DNF.

That set the stage for former class Rookie of the Year, Brett Marlatt as he blasted by some heavy weights in the division to take command early on and never relinquish the lead after assuming control.

For the second-generation Canisteo, NY driver it would be his first trip to Woodhull’s Victory Lane in 2024, but it did not come easy as he had to hold off Steve LeBarron who would wind up with his second runner-up finish of the night.

Like LeBarron, Austin Allen was a picture of consistency all night winding up third in both the make-up as well as the regular event.

Fourth place was claimed by Rickie Loucks who advanced from sixth as Pat Parker would complete the top five.

Like the RUSH CLM before them, the Southern Tier Customs Street Stocks also ran a pair of feature events including a make-up from May 4 which was a partially rained out event.

In the make-up, 2023 Track Champion, Teddy Morseman Jr. wasted little time getting to the head of the class, but his win did not come easy as he had to hold off last week’s feature winner, Mike Spencer to claim his first feature win of 2024.

Following Morseman Jr. and Spencer across the line was Clayton McClean in third with Mick Seeley and Bradly Morseman completing the top five.

Jim Buck and Mick the Quick Seeley would bring the second Southern Tier Customs Street Stock feature to the opening green flag.

Elkland, Pa native, Clayton McClean has been nothing but a picture of consistency since making his way back into the Street Stock Division a few weeks ago.

McClean would line up sixth on the opening grid and by lap five was in the lead which he would never relinquish. For McClean it was win two on the season backing up his May 18 victory.

Chasing McClean across the line was Seeley who had perhaps his best finish yet in 2024.

Bradly Morseman would maintain his third starting position at the opening green to complete the podium with Mike Williams and Mike Spencer completing the cars on the lead lap.

The Sawyer’s Camper and RV Repair and Service Hobby Stocks found a solid field of fifteen machines taking the opening green flag with Brandon Conklin setting the early pace in what would turn out to be a real classic between a pair of veteran’s in Conklin and Joe Birdsall who would slug it out the entire twenty lap distance.

Three caution flags would slow the pace and keep Birdsall within striking distance, but at the double checkered flags ending the twenty lap feature it was Conklin picking up his first win of 2024 holding off Birdsall who had to settle for second.

Third went to Addison veteran, Mike Carapella who dropped one spot but still hung on to claim third.

For the second week in a row, lady competitor, Meadow Dgien was a player and finished fourth after beginning the event in fifth.

Veteran Tioga, Pa competitor, Scott Brown would go on to complete the top five moving up one position from his original sixth place starting spot.

It was a busy night for the Big Jim’s Wicked Tee’s Quad C Division which features a blend of both front and rear wheel driven 4-cylinder Mini Stocks.

Early in the evening the division competed in the Annual Ted Morseman Sr. Dash for Cash which saw Teddy Morseman Jr. keeping the Dash money in the family as he cruised to the ten-lap victory.

In the twenty lap Big Jim’s Wicked Tee’s feature Chris Hand and Travis Southard would bring the fifteen-car field to green.

No less than five caution flags would keep the pace slowed and the field tight, but at the end of the day it was front wheel drive specialist, Wes Houghtaling finding his way to victory lane for the third time in 2024.

Houghtaling would begin the twenty-lap feature inside row three and waste little time getting to the point.

At the drop of the final checkered flag of the night, Ray Hyer would finish second advancing some dozen positions from his original fourteenth starting position.

Tony Dickerson moved from twelfth to complete the top three finishers.

Ryan Stone and pole starter Chris Hand would go on to complete the top five.

Prior to intermission the five car Big Jim’s Wicked Tee’s Youth Warrior Division took to the High Banked one-third of a mile oval and for the third consecutive week, Marcus Kerr would go on to claim victory.

Finishing second at the completion of the ten-lap affair was Izzabella Morseman who had to settle for her second consecutive runner-up finish.

Two-time 2024 class winner, Kayleigh Morseman was third followed by Courtney Thomas making her first appearance of the season.

Kolston DeCamp completed the field which found all five competitors going the ten-lap distance.

Congratulations to all competitors.

Coming up at Woodhull on June 8, 2024, it will be Leland Harris and Sawyer’s Camper and RV Repair sponsoring Armed Forces Night which will feature a Regular Super 7 Show of all the weekly classes.

In addition, the Sawyer’s Hobby Stocks will run a special King of the Ring one-on-one elimination event.
