Westbrook, Costa, Beagle & Elslinger Take Christmas In August Wins At Ohsweken Speedway

Story By: BRENT OTCHERE / OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY – OHSWEKEN, ONT – Pinewood Horticultural Services and Ontario Agra presented Christmas in August at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday; Dylan Westbrook, Jesse Costa, Ryan Beagle, and Jeff Elsliger took A-Main wins.

Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars
Liam Martin and D.J. Christie brought the 25 car field to the green flag for the 360 Sprint Car A-Main. Martin set the pace, leading the opening laps of the race and encountering traffic in just six laps. Christie brought out the red flag on lap seven with a violent solo flip off the track in turn three. Christie immediately pulled himself out of the wreck unharmed.

The restart saw Dylan Westbrook get the better of Martin and take the lead away. Unlike other times when Westbrook has taken the lead this season, he had to fight off a challenge for the win as Nick Sheridan proved to be a real threat. Sheridan was wheel-to-wheel with Westbrook in the closing stages of the race, but ultimately Westbrook was able to edge out Sheridan after a late restart and pull away for the win.

The triumph was a milestone for Westbrook, as it was his 40th A-Main victory in 360 Sprint Car competition at Ohsweken. Josh Hansen was able to squeak by Sheridan for second, while Sheridan settled for the final podium spot. Rounding out the top five were Martin and Matt Farnham.

Strickland’s Crate Sprint Cars
Brian Nanticoke started on pole with Al Sleight next to him for the 20 lap Crate Sprint Car A-Main. Nanticoke led the opening laps with Brett Stratford hot on his heels. The one and only caution flag came out when Keegan Baker came to a stop in turn one. Nanticoke was able to hold off the hard-charging Stratford initially after the restart, however Stratford overtook for the lead on lap eleven.

Once Stratford got the clean air, the handling went away for him and allowed Jesse Costa to close the gap. Costa took the lead in heavy traffic with seven laps to go and knifed through more traffic to lock down the win. The win was Costa’s 10th career Crate Sprint Car victory at Ohsweken and moved him into a tie with Ryan Hunsinger and Holly Porter for second on the all-time win list. Stratford was able to salvage a second place finish, with Brent Begolo finishing a close third. Steve Murdock finished in fourth, and Andrew Hennessy closed out the top five.

Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks
Logan Ferguson started on pole alongside Scott McPhail to take the green flag for the 20 lap Thunder Stock A-Main. Ferguson was only able to hold his pole position for a single lap as Donny Lampman found himself leading by lap two. Lap three saw a caution flag, allowing Ryan Dinning to become the third leader of the race after a superb restart. Dinning’s lead was cut short due to another caution, which allowed Zach Bleich to take over out front after the restart.

The racing began to heat up as the leaders were racing five wide, displaying their talent and car control. The spectacular racing came to a halt when a red flag was thrown due to Kyle Andress hitting the inside wall in turn four and barrel rolling. Andress was unharmed in the accident. The closing laps had a three-way battle for the lead between Ryan Beagle, Adam Plazek, and Dave Bailey. A late restart saw Beagle get the better of his competition and take his 18th career Thunder Stock win at Ohsweken. Next to cross the line were Bailey in second, Plazek third, Ron Loggie fourth, and Bleich fifth.

HRW Automotive Mini Stocks
The front row of the grid featured Nick Erskine and Jeff Elsliger to begin the 15 lap Mini Stock A-Main. Elsliger proved to be the one to beat at the drop of the green flag, easily putting over a one second gap on the field. Fabio Olivieri came to a stop on lap five, bringing out the caution flag. Elsliger stood tall to the task, leading again after the restart.

Ken Hair tried to set up an overtake on Elsliger, but his efforts were thwarted by an untimely caution when Olivieri stopped on the track again. Elsliger timed the restart perfectly with just three laps to go, managing to lead every lap and take his fourth career Mini Stock win at Ohsweken. Following Elsliger were Hair in second, Tim DeBoer third, Nick Erskine fourth, and Alex Riley fifth.
