Story By: PAUL SZMAL / NY PENN IMCA MODIFIED SERIES – SELINSGROVE, PA – A cool and cloudy April Sunday morning turned into a sunny, beautiful afternoon and evening as the 2023 Close Racing Supply NY Penn IMCA Modified Series presented by M.R. Grafix opened its 2023 season at Selinsgrove Speedway in Selinsgrove, PA.
After 25 laps on the 1/2 mile clay oval, former NASCAR driver David Stremme brought home the feature win and the $2,023 payday.
Eddie Sites and Rodney Morgan brought the field to the green for the ‘Icebreaker 25’ feature event, and after Lance Conley spun on the frontstretch on the first start attempt with a broken tie rod and Jacob McConnell broke a rear end under the ensuing caution, racing resumed with Eddie Sites grabbing the lead. David Stremme and Rich Michael quickly moved into second and third. Stremme closed in on Sites and passed him to take the lead on lap 2.
Stremme pulled out to a several car length lead as Keith Jack Lamphere battled Rodney Morgan for fourth, taking the spot on lap 4. Michael Jr moved inside of Sites in turn one on lap 6 to take second as Stremme extended his lead to over 3 seconds. Ben Sites started to close in on Morgan to battle for fourth on lap 10 as Michael Jr tried to close the gap to Stremme.
Stremme was in lapped traffic by the halfway point, picking his way past cars at the back of the field while Michael Jr gave chase. The yellow flew on lap 16 when Matt Benjamin spun and nosed into the wall between turns three and four. Lamphere dropped out with a mechanical issue under the caution while running in the top five.
On the restart, Stremme again pulled out to a lead while Eddie Sites tried to fend off Ben Sites for third.
At the checkers, Stremme has a full straightaway on Michael Jr to take the win, with Eddie Sites, Ben Sites, and Morgan rounding out the top five.
Midosa USA Ltd 8 lap heat races were won by David Stremme and Rich Michael Jr, each receiving $100 from Midosa USA Ltd.
